I choose something that's short and meaningful to me. All of my domains are personal/interest-oriented, so I would want a name that has a meaning to me.

Once I have a defined list, I test each one in a whois site until I find what I think is the most suitable name.

    How about you?
I too use to do the same. I would think a set of domain names before registering. Then i would visit www.WhoisXY.com to check its availability.

As we all know that before we have website, of-course we have to have the domain name. Most of the people just go to the Godaddy .com and they search for the domain which is available according to their requirement and they purchase it. But to my knowledge, that is absolutely a wrong approach. There are some methods to find the good domain name. They are

    - Determine the market
    - Choose target keyword
    - Evaluate competition
    - Find a domain
    - Branding

I think the best way to decide what domain to choose is to choose from 2 options:
    1. keywords that people use when trying to get you.
    2. build a brand(harder method) and choose a catchy name.

The domain name should be easy to type and easy to remember. Also it should matches the idea of the website. Just start brainstorming and see what is available.
