Well, I'm currently an administrator at http://www.trap17.com and have my site http://plusone.trap17.com hosted there, and I must say, it's a very well set up host. It's a little over a year old now, and still running strong, with good management, and support staff. The community's pretty nice as well. I'm in charge of a lot of stuff, but focus more towards the graphics sections, as that's kinda my area of expertise.

As for bad hosts, well, my previous host was http://www.sferahost.com which I was also an admin at...it started out pretty nicely, but after the second owner change, it pretty much got abandoned. Apparently it was "hacked", but I don't believe it. Anyway, it's still down now, so no worries about getting stuck there. :D

good host is www.hiya-host.com

cheap with a huge amount of space and b/w, very reliable too, i'm still being hosted by them but i just use them as a test for site templates etc, as im about to set up my own hosting company

bad host was www.webela.com

good host while around, but for no reason went down, meaning i lost everything

Etc.
08-29-2005, 09:55 AM
I've had bad experiences with many free hosts such as web1000 (before other company bought it), freewebtown (unreliable), ww-hosting, frandt.com (slow, now offline), 000k.com (unreliable, now offline), t-rh.com, whosters.com, daricash, and so on.

RustyNut

the good news about all these hosts is they dont last for long, although i guesse not so good if you dont backup your files on your own hd.

maybe this post could be stickied, and the original poster edit his post to accomidate a list of good/bad hosts.

would be a good guide for new people looking for a host

gecko

I am building my website on freewebtown.com and have so far found their services excellent. But you said their services are unreliable, can you please tell me your whole experience with them, so that I may save my time by choosing some other web hosting provider.

to put it simply.... yes

wacky_lokpo
08-31-2005, 04:33 PM
The one thing I hate about free hosting is the uncertainty of your hosting future, which is probably why people keep telling me to get paid hosting. But I'm a cheapo and despite repeated warnings, I am still on the lookout for up and coming new hosts. It's fun :)

I remember almost three years back, I got 100 mb, ad-free and I was so pleased. I uploaded everything and 3 days after, GONE.

I had 5 other similar experiences and one involved 12 GB of space. :) Seriously, that was my clue but I wanted to believe this one would stay. Poof. Gone after 4 days of 12 GB hosting bliss!

gecko
08-31-2005, 11:09 PM
yes well this is the whole point of this thread...

obviously there are many free hosts ot there and so i decided to compile a list of sites i have prooven to lack quality services

and ofcourse of those which so far have prooven themselves 2 me.

Then others have added to the lst providing with more fr=e good and bad hosts and so ive added...

the rpoblem is not many hosts think abot the lykly loss of profits b4 they start offering free hosting...

and so they, generally speaking, die within a few months...

wacky_lokpo
08-31-2005, 11:34 PM
I know that's why i don't stick to one host because I always think that oh, I'll probably have another week with them or a month and that's it. :( i'm usually right too, lol.

RustyNut
09-01-2005, 01:38 PM
free hosts are good to use, if you have a domian, and you constantly backup your net files.. then you can switch from each to another... keepin your free hosting, would allow alot of downtime though..

gecko
09-01-2005, 11:29 PM
mmm and itd take time...

personally i dnt think its worth the dwn time & the worry

wacky_lokpo
09-02-2005, 01:25 AM
I agree that having a domain is better when you keep moving from one free host to another because, should you move again, your loyal followers will only have their bookmarks to guide and it'll be as if you never moved at all! :)

gecko
09-02-2005, 12:38 PM
If i was you and you really anted to be cheap just use a domain forwarder (such as .tk) and remove the adds...

that way when you do move you dont have to wait up to 3 days for the domain to reseolve again... ech time that you move, and you could easily move from 1 host to the other with no downtime at all...

DaDevil
09-02-2005, 02:02 PM
from my experience switching nameservers is pretty much instant, and a proper domain is alot more likely to get listed on search engines.

wacky_lokpo
09-04-2005, 01:52 PM
ah, he probably means the progating ;/ but I agree, switching does take only minutes! just remember to add the domain to where you moved to properly though! :)
